What It Is
The BabyHawk mei tai (pronounced "may tie," not "my tie") is a stylish and functional modern American adaptation of a traditional East Asian cloth carrier used by generations of families to keep their babies close while having both hands free to get their work done. The BabyHawk mei tai improves on the traditional design with padded top shoulder straps, a unique flip-up/flip-down stiff headrest that cradles sleepy heads, and a sleek yet sturdy design that will help you carry your baby comfortably on your front or your back from the newborn stage to the toddler years. The two-shoulder design distributes baby's weight ergonomically on your shoulders, torso, and waist, and keeps baby securely next to your body while leaving your hands and arms free. The beauty of the mei tai is that the long straps give you almost infinite adjustability to raise or lower baby to achieve optimal positioning and for easy nursing, and allow parents from extra-small to extra-large to use the same carrier.
How It Works
If you can tie a knot, you can use a BabyHawk mei tai! The bottom set of straps -- the ones going straight across -- are tied snugly around your natural waist, with the carrier hanging straight down like a French waiter's apron. Baby goes in between the carrier and your body. The lightly padded top shoulder straps go over your arms and either get crossed on your back for a front carry, or worn backpack-style for a back carry. Depending on how much extra top strap length you have, tying variations such as the Lexi Twist and Tibetan Finish are possible.
Carrying Positions
Front facing in with froggy legs for a newborn or small baby
Front facing in with one or both legs out for a bigger baby
Regular back carry for a baby from 5-6+ months
High back carry for a newborn-2 months (advanced technique; requires careful practice!)
Hip and forward facing out positions are possible but may not be as optimal for many parents
