What It Is

Kelley Mason, designer of the Kozy Carrier mei tai, was one of the very first to bring a modern version of the traditional Asian-style baby carrier to the American market. As with any mei tai, the Kozy features a set of waist straps, a set of shoulder straps, and a body panel -- a simple cloth carrier design that works for babies and parents of all shapes and sizes. The Kozy Carrier is one of the biggest and tallest mei tai carriers, made from medium-weight yet soft canvas for excellent durability and support. The bottom of the carrier can be rolled up as necessary for smaller babies, while the soft padded top curves in to provide support for sleepy heads. Although the Kozy was designed by a petite woman, it fits wearers of all sizes, particularly those who are taller or have broad shoulders. It is fully finished on both sides and is reversible so that either the pattern side or the plain side can show. The angled bottom straps provide a deep seat to accommodate a newborn's entire body or a toddler's rear end and torso, while the wide, lightly padded shoulder straps help distribute baby's weight across your shoulders and torso. A neat little concealed pocket on one of the shoulder straps is the perfect size to stash a house key, small cellphone, or credit card for when you're out and about.

How It Works

As with any other mei tai baby carrier, the Kozy's bottom straps are tied in a full knot (no half-knots and no bows, please!) around the wearer's natural waist. The carrier body keeps baby next to you on your front or your back, and the lightly padded shoulder straps cross over baby's body and tie in a second knot with crossed straps for a front carry or backpack-style straps for a back carry. If you have enough strap length, tying variations such as the Lexi Twist or Tibetan Finish are options. The Kozy allows legs-in for a newborn or a small baby, legs-out for a bigger baby, on either your front or your back. The Kozy is my top pick for a newborn high back carry (an advanced carrying position that requires lots of practice, but is extremely useful!). It's also a great carrier for discreet nursing.
